The Department of Mathematics heartily congratulates Professor GAN Wee Teck on being conferred the President’s Science Award (2017), for his illustrious contributions to the field of mathematics, and his outstanding work on the Langlands programme and the Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture. The President’s Science Award (PSA) is presented to research scientists and engineers in Singapore who have made outstanding contributions in basic research leading to the discovery of new knowledge or the pioneering development of scientific or engineering techniques and methods.

Congratulations to Professor ZHANG De-Qi and Professor ZHAO Gong Yun for receiving the 2017 National Day Awards - The Long Service Medal. The Singapore National Day Awards recognize various forms of merit and service to the nation.

The Department of Mathematics heartily congratulates Provost Chair Professor Toh Kim Chuan on winning the 2017 Farkas Prize of the INFORMS Optimization Society.
Prof. Toh was an (double) alumnus of NUS (B.Sc, First Class Honours and M.Sc in Mathematics), and began his academic career as a Senior Tutor in the Department of Mathematics in 1991. The 2017 Farkas Prize was awarded to Prof. Toh for his fundamental contributions to the theory, practice, and application of convex optimization, especially semidefinite programming and conic programming.

The Department of Mathematics heartily congratulates our alumnus Professor Lim Lek-Heng of the University of Chicago on winning the 2017 James H. Wilkinson Prize in Numerical Analysis and Scientific Computing and the 2017 Stephen Smale Prize of the Society for the Foundations of Computational Mathematics. Prof. Lim received B.Sc. (Honors) in Mathematics from NUS in 1996.

New papers in top journals by Department members:
  • Professor Dinh Tien Cuong’s co-authored paper “Unique ergodicity for foliations in P2  with an invariant curve” will appear in Inventiones Math.
  • Professor Gan Wee Teck’s co-authored paper “Local theta correspondence of tempered representations and Langlands parameters” will appear in Inventiones Math.
  • Professor Loke Hung Yean’s co-authored paper “Local theta correspondences of supercuspidal representations” will appear in Annales scientifiques de l'École normale supérieure.
  • Dr Tong Xin’s co-authored paper “Robustness and Accuracy of finite Ensemble Kalman filters in large dimensions” will appear in Communications on Pure and Applied Math.
  • Professor Zhang Louxin’s co-authored paper “Reconciliation with non-binary gene trees revisited” will appear in the Journal of the ACM.

Professor TAN Eng Chye will become the next NUS President. A 1st Class Honours graduate in mathematics, Professor Tan began his academic career as a Senior Tutor with the Department of Mathematics in 1985, and rose through the ranks to become a full professor in 2006.

Professors Sanjay Jain (School of Computing, NUS) and Frank Stephan, and their collaborators, Dr Li Wei from NUS’ Department of Mathematics, and Professors Cristian Calude and Bakhadyr Khoussainov from the University of Auckland, won the STOC 2017 Best Paper Award for their paper, ‘Deciding Parity Games in Quasipolynomial Time’, at STOC 2017 Theory Fest: the 49th ACM Symposium on the Theory of Computing.

Professor DINH Tien Cuong has been appointed as Provost’s Chair from 1 July 2017. Provost’s Chair appointments are for a three year period, and are made in recognition of the recipients’ outstanding and impactful scholarly accomplishments which are internationally acknowledged. Professor Dinh is considered one of the world’s top analysts working on Complex Dynamics of Several Variables. He has been invited as a sectional speaker for “Analysis and Operator Algebras” at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) 2018 to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is a singular honour to be invited to speak at the ICM, and the achievement is widely acclaimed by the international mathematical community as a mark of excellence.

Professor GAN Wee Teck has joined the editorial board of the Canadian Journal of Mathematics/Canadian Mathematical Bulletin, from January 2017.

Professor CHAN Heng Huat has joined the editorial board of the Ramanujan Journal, from May 2017.

Professor YU Shih-Hsien has joined the editorial board of the International Journal of Mathematics, from May 2017.

Shuichiro Takeda of the University of Missouri has been awarded the prestigious AMS Centennial Fellowship for the 2017-2018 academic year. Takeda's research focuses on automorphic forms and representations of p-adic groups, especially from the point of view of the Langlands program. He will use the Centennial Fellowship to visit the National University of Singapore during the academic year 2017-2018.

Our warmest congratulations to Professor DINH Tien Cuong on being selected as a sectional speaker for "Analysis and Operator Algebras" at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) 2018 to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The ICM is the largest and the most prestigious international congress in the mathematics community and is held once every four years.

Mr ZHAO Quan (PhD student, 2013 cohort) and Mr ANG Yan Sheng (Undergraduate student, 2015 cohort) have been selected to participate in the 5th Heidelberg Laureate Forum, to be held from September 23 to 29, 2017 in Heidelberg, Germany. About 200 highly talented young researchers will participate in the forum.

A/P Victor TAN has been elected as the President of the Singapore Mathematical Society (SMS). Other key members of the SMS Management Committee include Vice Presidents A/P Chan Song Heng (NTU), Professor Gan Wee Teck (NUS), Dr Hang Kim Hoo (Jurong Junior College), and Honorary Secretary Dr Tang Wee Kee (NTU).

Professor SHEN Zuowei has been elected as a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society, for contributions to approximation theory, wavelet theory, and image processing. The Fellows of the American Mathematical Society program recognizes members who have made outstanding contributions to the creation, exposition, advancement, communication, and utilization of mathematics.
