For his contribution to probability theory. In 2001, Professor Louis Chen was elected as Fellow of the Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) for his contribution to Science. Prof Chen is well-known for his fundamental work on Poisson approximation, commonly known as the Chen-Stein method, which has grown into one of the most important areas of discrete probability with diverse applications in such fields as molecular biology, random graphs, computer science, extreme value theory and probabilistic number theory.
