Activities with
Local & Overseas Institutions

Activities in conjunction with Singapore Mathematical
Society
Faculty members of the
Department play an active and substantial role in the
Singapore Mathematical Society. Outreach activities are
organised for the promotion of mathematics education among
schools and junior colleges. These include lectures at
schools and junior colleges, enrichment programmes for
primary and secondary school students, workshops for
secondary school and junior college teachers, as well as
mathematics competitions, namely Singapore Mathematical
Olympiad (Junior, Senior and Open Sections), Singapore
Secondary School Mathematical Olympiad (Junior and Senior
Sections), and Singapore Mathematics Project Festival
(Junior and Senior Sections).

Career Fairs
The Department also lends its
support to career fairs organised by various schools in
Singapore by sending representatives to help answer
questions on mathematics programmes and career prospects.

Faculty Outreach Activities
The Department provides its
full support to outreach activities organised by the Faculty
of Science. For example, the
Science Focus workshops for
junior college students, the
CHAOS competition for secondary
schools, and the Science for Teachers initiatives. Faculty
members contribute lectures, workshops and questions for
these activities.

International Mathematical
Olympiad Training
Faculty members of the
Department help the Ministry of Education to train the
Singapore team for the
International Mathematical Olympiad.

Mathematics Enrichment
Camp
The Department
organises an annual one-day Mathematics Enrichment Camp
(typically in December) for students at pre-university
level. The camp consists of talks in various
interesting mathematics topics and applications.

Mathematics Enrichment Talks
As its commitment to
mathematics education of the nation, the Department is very
active in providing mathematics enrichment talks to the
schools in Singapore. A large number of talks on various
topics of interest have been delivered at many different
schools.

Public Lectures
The Department organises public
lectures to promote mathematics education and awareness of
its usefulness. These are presented by faculty members of
the Department as well as international experts. Public
lectures by the latter are jointly organised with the
Institute for Mathematical Sciences.

Science Month
The
Science Month is an annual
high profile national event organised by the Singapore
Science Centre which reaches out to students and the general
public to promote science and technology. The Department
regularly contributes to this event with department open
house and public lectures.

Supervision of Projects
Faculty members also propose
and supervise projects under special programmes of the
Ministry of Education. These programmes include the
Science Research Programme for junior college students
and the
Science Mentorship Programme for secondary school
students.

House
The Department holds an open
house on a regular basis to showcase to potential students
and the general public its research and education programmes,
as well as various applications of mathematics.

Visits from Local Schools and

The Department hosts visits by
students and staff from local pre-university institutions as
well as overseas institutions. This is to enable the
visitors to have a better idea of university education on
mathematics in Singapore.

The Department through its research centre CWAIP and two research programmes in strategic areas of applied mathematics lend its expertise to local industries and research institutes with joint seminars, workshops and collaborations.

From time to time, the research

CWAIP host internship students from overseas
universities in countries such as France, Germany and India,
adding a different dimension to their education.
