Buildings - What They Are and Some of Their Uses

 

 

Abstract

 

The notion of a building is a simplicial complex introduced by Jacques Tits to study simple algebraic groups over arbitrary fields.  We give a brief introduction to buildings and then describe some of their uses.

 

Brief Biography

 

Allen Moy is a chair professor in the Department of Mathematics at HKUST.   He obtained his PhD from the University of Chicago, in 1982 under Paul Sally.  Professor Moy is a leading specialist on p-adic groups, and is particularly well-known for his work on Moy-Prasad filtration, a fundamental tool in representation theory of p-adic groups.
