Frequently Asked Questions on
Mathematics in FASS

This shared major programme is no longer offered from 2007/2008

Is Honours in Mathematics available to students in FASS (Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences)?
No, because mathematics may only be read as one of the two subjects in the Shared Major Programme in FASS.

Students who are very keen to read Honours in Mathematics would have to apply to the Office of Admission for permission to transfer to the Faculty of Science. Upon approval and transfer, students may be required to read more MAxxxx modules to strengthen their background for the Honours programme.

For older cohorts reading MQxxxx modules, these would only be counted towards breadth requirements upon approval.

Such students would receive a basic degree in arts but an honours degree in science.

Are FASS students allowed to read minor in Mathematics or Financial Mathematics?
No.

Are FASS students allowed to read MAxxxx modules?
Students from 2000 and earlier cohorts are not allowed to read MAxxxx or GMxxxx modules at all.

Students from 2001 and 2002 cohorts may read MAxxxx modules to satisfy CFM/breadth requirements.

Students from 2003 and later cohorts who are reading shared major in mathematics should read MAxxxx modules to fulfil their shared major graduation requirements. They are not allowed to read MAxxxx modules to satisfy breadth requirements.

I intend to teach after graduation. Should I read mathematics in FASS or in the Faculty of Science?
Both mathematics in FASS and Faculty of Science are offered by us but they differ a lot in course requirements due to different curriculum structures in both faculties.

The training offered to students reading shared major in mathematics in FASS would not be as comprehensive and in depth as that offered in the Faculty of Science.

Students who graduate with a shared major in mathematics in FASS would also not be qualified to teach at junior colleges.

If you intend to be a mathematics teacher, especially at junior colleges, it is recommended that you major in mathematics in the Faculty of Science.
