Honours Project Schedule

Semester 1 intake | Semester 2 intake

 

  1. This schedule is only relevant to students working on Individual Projects and is intended as a reference.

  2. Week numbers indicated in the schedule are in accordance to the university's academic calendar.

  3. Students working in Project cum Seminar groups should also refer to the guidelines for submission schedule.

 

For students working from Semester 2, 2008/09:

Students are advised to pick up skills in typesetting (for example Latex) and to read up on background materials for the project. They do not need to see their supervisors during this period.

Students to fix consultation appointments with supervisors on their own.

Semester 2, week 7-8

Introductory talks

2 - 13 Mar 09

Each student presents a 15-20 minutes talk together with 8-10 minutes discussion and questioning.

Students are to make room reservations personally at the general office.

Semester 1 (2009/10), week 1-2

Mid-term progress talks

11 - 21 Aug 09

Each student presents a 25-35 minutes talk together with 15-20 minutes discussion and questioning.

Students are to make room reservations personally at the general office.

It is not compulsory for examiners to sit in at the talks. Nevertheless students should still consult examiners for availability in case they wish to join in. 

Semester 1 (2009/10)week 7

Project thesis submission

by 4.30pm,

2 Oct 09

Students submit project thesis as follows:
- 2
printed copies of project report, which may

  be ring-bound or held together in folders or
  files;

- (if applicable) 2 CDs containing

  programming that forms part of the project.

 

Late submissions are subject to marks penalty.

Semester 1 (2009/10), week 8-9

Evaluation of project

5 - 16 Oct 09

Supervisors and examiners read and grade projects.

Semester 1 (2009/10), week 10-11

Oral presentation & interview

19 - 30 Oct 09

 

Reserve room by 13 Oct 09

Students are to make room reservations personally at the general office, taking into consideration the availability of their supervisors and examiners. Presentations must be completed within the given dates.

   

Students are generally interviewed immediately after the presentation.

 

All seminar rooms in the department are equipped with OHP and LCD projectors.

 

Students who wish to practice their presentations should also reserve time slots at the general office. Supervisors do not sit in at practice sessions/rehearsals.

Supervisors and examiners will arrange for the interview venue if the presentation venue is not available.

 

Students who miss the reservation deadline

- may affect fellow students in fulfilling their
  quota for attendance at talks; and

- risk having his/her project being penalized
  for being late.

Semester 1 (2009/10), week 12-13

Amendment of project thesis

2 - 13 Nov 09

Students make recommended changes to their projects (if any).

Semester 1 (2009/10), week 13

2nd interview

9 - 13 Nov 09

Some students may be asked to attend a 2nd interview by a special panel. Questions asked at this interview are related to essential and elementary mathematical concepts that are used or closely related to the projects.

Semester 1 (2009/10), week 12-Reading week

Final assessment

2 - 20 Nov 09

(If applicable) Students submit amended project theses directly to supervisors for final assessment.

Students should consult supervisors for preferred mode of submission.

Semester 1 (2009/10), Reading week

Final submission

by 4.30pm,

20 Nov 09

Students submit final version (amended, where applicable) of their project theses in PDF format online at the department's website.

 

Late submissions are subject to marks penalty. Note that online submission is time-logged.
