Mathematics in FASS

From academic year 2001/2002, Mathematics is offered as one of two subjects in a shared major programme leading to the degree of Bachelor of Arts in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS).

Students who matriculated before 2001 read mathematics as one of the subjects in a double-subject concentration or a double-subject major.

See sample study plan.

This shared major programme is no longer offered from 2007/2008.

Entry Requirements

The minimum requirement for reading level 1000 mathematics modules is a pass in a mathematics subject at ordinary level in the G.C.E. 'A' Level Examination or its equivalent (e.g. Additional Mathematics at the G.C.E. 'O' Level Examination).

Course Structure by Cohort

Subject major requirements for students who matriculated from  2002/2003 onwards

A student who reads mathematics as one of the subjects in a shared major must fulfil the shared major requirement outlined in Appendix GR-FASS and the following conditions. Honours in mathematics is NOT available to students in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

  1. Pass both modules MA1101R Linear Algebra and MA1102R Calculus,

  2. Pass five MAxxxx modules at level-2000 or higher, of which one should be MA2221 Techniques in Advanced Calculus or MA2108 Mathematical Analysis I (old module title: Advanced Calculus II) and at least two modules should be at level-3000 or higher.

Subject major requirements for students who matriculated 2001/2002

Students who wish to major in Mathematics as a shared major must fulfil the shared major requirement outlined in Appendix GR-FASS (part II in the FASS handbook) and the following conditions. Honours Mathematics is NOT available to students in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

  1. Pass the following essential modules:
    ·  MQ1103 Basic Mathematics
    ·  MQ2101 Linear Algebra
    ·  MQ2102 Advanced Calculus

  1. Pass four modules, of which at least three should be MQ32xx modules, from the following list of modules:
    ·
    MQ2204 Operations Research I
    ·  MQ2205 Introduction to Statistics
    ·  MQ3201 Abstract Algebra
    ·  MQ3203 Complex Variables
    ·  MQ3204 Operations Research II
    ·  MQ3205 Statistical Methods
    ·  MQ3206 Numerical Methods
    ·  MQ3207 Combinatorial Analysis

Students who are unable to fulfil any of the above conditions due to unavailability of MQ modules, may choose to satisfy the following condition instead:

  • Pass 1 MQ1xxxx and 6 level 2000 or 3000 MA/MQ modules (at least 3 at level 3000)

Subject major requirements for students who matriculated on or before 2000/2001

A student who reads mathematics as one of the subjects in a double-subject concentration or a double-subject major should fulfil, in addition to Faculty requirements, any one of the following sets of requirements (1), (2), (3) or (4):

Set (1):

  • pass MQ1101 and MQ1102,

  • read MQ2201, MQ2202 and at least one of the modules MQ2204 and MQ2205, or read MQ2203, MQ2204 and MQ2205,

  • pass a total of six modules from modules coded MQ2xxx and MQ3xxx, of which at least three should be MQ3xxx modules.

Set (2):

  • read both MQ1101 and MQ1102 and pass only one of them,

  • read MQ2201, MQ2202 and at least one of the modules MQ2204 and MQ2205, or read MQ2203, MQ2204 and MQ2205,

  • pass a total of seven modules from modules coded MQ2xxx and MQ3xxx, of which at least three should be MQ3xxx modules.

Set (3):

  • pass only one of the modules MQ1101 and MQ1102,

  • pass MQ1103,

  • read MQ2201, MQ2202 and at least one of the modules MQ2204 and MQ2205, or read MQ2203, MQ2204 and MQ2205,

  • pass a total of six modules from modules coded MQ2xxx and MQ3xxx, of which at least three should be MQ3xxx modules.

Set (4):

  • pass MQ1103,

  • read MQ2201, MQ2202 and at least one of the modules MQ2204 and MQ2205, or read MQ2203, MQ2204 and MQ2205,

  • pass a total of seven modules from modules coded MQ2xxx and MQ3xxx, of which at least three should be MQ3xxx modules.

Students who are unable to fulfil any of the four conditions above due to unavailability of MQ modules, may choose to satisfy any of the following conditions instead:

  • Pass 2 MQ1xxxx and 6 level 2000 or 3000 MA/MQ modules (at least 3 at level 3000),
    OR

  • Pass 1 MQ1xxxx and 7 2000 or 3000 MA/MQ modules (at least 3 at level 3000).
