About the Programme

This is a new framework established in NUS introduced from AY 2007/08. For more details on the general structure, refer to Special Undergraduate Programmes at Registrar Office's website.

Important Notes

  1. Students already reading a primary major in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics or Quantitative Finance are not allowed to read a second major in Mathematics or Financial Mathematics.

  2. Students reading minor in Mathematics or Financial Mathematics are not allowed to read a second major in Mathematics or Financial Mathematics concurrently.

Application Procedure

Refer to the Application Procedure in Faculty of Science.

Non-Science students who wish to apply for second major in a science subject should complete and submit the application form to AskMathUG@nus.edu.sg by the deadline stipulated on the form (except for the Double Major in Mathematics/Applied Mathematics & Economics listed below).

Applications are subject to department’s approval.

It is the students’ responsibility to strategize and plan to finish the second major by the time they are due to graduate.

Second Major in Mathematics

Students with strong interest in mathematics but majoring in other disciplines such as computer science, economics/business, engineering, physics or statistics, are encouraged to take up a Second Major in Mathematics.  This programme offers a broad-based education in mathematics and covers the same nine core mathematics modules as in the primary Major in Mathematics/Applied Mathematics. The three more elective modules in the requirements, from a list of interdisciplinary subjects, allow flexibility and ample scope for the student to design a programme which complements his/her primary major and other interests.

Second Major in Financial Mathematics

Students with strong quantitative background and keen interest in applications of mathematics in banking and finance are encouraged to take up a Second Major in Financial Mathematics.  This programme extends the Minor in Financial Mathematics by offering a broader set of modules in quantitative methods required for a more in-depth understanding of key financial applications.   There are nine core modules for building the key mathematical and quantitative foundation, and for imparting the mathematical theory behind various financial models and applications. The three elective modules in the requirements allow flexibility to suit the student’s interests.

Double Major in Mathematics/Applied Mathematics & Economics

(Updated 26/12/2008)

The disciplines of Mathematics and Economics closely relate to and are natural complements of each other. On one hand, mathematical methods are indispensible to the development of economic theory and analysis. On the other hand, economics has provided a variety of important problems for mathematics such as those in optimization and operations research.

To provide an additional and more streamlined avenue for students of one department to do a second major in the other department, the Department of Mathematics at the Faculty of Science (FoS) and the Department of Economics at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) have thus come together to jointly promote the Double Major in Mathematics/Applied Mathematics and Economics, within the Double Major Programme framework of NUS.

Application Procedure

Intake

Each department will call for applications in June every year, which will only be opened to its own students beginning their second year in August of the same year.

To apply for this double major, applicants must satisfy the following conditions:

  1. Obtained a CAP of at least 3.50 at the end of the first year of study in NUS; and

  2. Passed four qualifying modules in the first year; and

  3. Achieved a group average point (GAP) of at least 3.50 for the qualifying modules.

Qualifying Modules

For FoS students who are reading primary major in Mathematics or Applied Mathematics and applying to read second major in Economics:

  • MA1101R Linear Algebra I

  • MA1102R Calculus

  • MA2216/ST2131 Probability

  • EC1301 Principles of Economics

For FASS students who are reading primary major in Economics and applying to read second major in Mathematics:

  • MA1101R Linear Algebra I

  • MA1102R Calculus

  • EC2101 Microeconomics I

  • EC2102 Macroeconomics I

Students admitted to read this double major will proceed to fulfil the respective second major requirements from semester 1 of their second year. FoS students should refer to the requirements for second major in EC while FASS students should refer to the requirements for second major in MA above.
